Tips for Planning the Ultimate Minecraft Birthday Party

Minecraft has taken over homes across America (and the world). If your house hasn’t been invaded by the Minecraft phenomenon, chances are pretty good that it will be.  Naturally, anything that is this popular with children and teens will also make for an incredible party theme!  Even if you’ve never personally played the game, planning a Minecraft party  doesn’t have to be daunting.

Jennifer Carver of Banner Events has 4 easy steps to build on for planning a Minecraft party that includes decorations, activities, treats and favors guests will dig!

Tip #1:  Plan in pixels.  One of the distinguishing characteristics of the game is that everything is pixelated and block-shaped—the characters, buildings, ground and even the monsters have that old-school pixelated quality.  Incorporating this into your party is easy! Invitations can be created from black and green cardstock or construction paper, cut into squares and adhered to look like a creeper.  Translate the pixelated look to your party space by adding squares throughout your styling.  Square paper plates can become a theme appropriate “creeper” backdrop and can also be carried to the dining table.  Black electrical tape can be cut into squares and adhered to green balloons, paper plates and so on.  Imagine the possibilities with square cakes and even cookies, decked out to look like game elements.

Tip #2:  Stick to the black, green and brown color scheme reminiscent of game play and add in a few building elements.  The black, green and brown color palette from Minecraft is iconic!  Consider different ways to incorporate these shades into your party planning.  Tablecloths, cutlery, and paper goods can all include Minecraft colors.  Consider adding grass or stone printed paper or plastic table coverings to bring in an outdoorsy/building feel to the party.  Use faux grass to display treats.  Fill clear vessels with rocks or dirt and display Minecraft themed party picks. There are so many fun ways to bring in that earthy Minecraft vibe.

Tip #3:  Build a Minecraft inspired food display.  Think square.  Think edible building materials and game elements. Think back to tip #1 and how you can incorporate that pixelated look into your food display.  Cut up desserts, fruit, cheese, sandwiches and just about anything you can think of into squares! Add a few Minecraft Creeper inspired treats, such as green cupcakes with black Creeper face details, or a square Creeper cake, or even frosted brownies with black gel details. For additional snacks that may not be suited for a square shaped transformation, give them a building material name.  Much of the Minecraft world involves building.  Using clever food labels, everyday snacks and refreshments can be transformed into Minecraft munchies!  Pretzels become building “sticks”.  Chocolate coins or candy bars in gold wrappers become “gold”.  Red licorice or red wrapped packages of Rolos become dynamite (TNT).  Colored candy becomes “diamonds”, “emeralds” and so forth.  Don’t forget the beverages!  Creep up green drink bottles with “Creeper Juice” beverage labels or black vinyl Creeper faces.

Tip #4:  Plan for dynamite activities and party favors.  Of course, a Minecraft party can include some actual video game playing, but we’re trying to help you think outside the “box”.  A few unique ideas could involve crafting diamond pick axes, a custom creeper mask or photo prop. Guests could make their own Creeper inspired favor bag or box to fill with treats from the dessert table.  Of course you could do Minecraft puzzles or a matching game for smaller children.  Send home the crafted items and some treats for party favors that will be treasured.

Using these four tips and your imagination, planning a Minecraft party can be easily accomplished.  Don’t forget to mine the internet for additional ideas.  There are some real party gems of inspiration to be unearthed!
