As a lifelong crafter, I tend to scan the clearance aisles whenever I am in a craft store. I came across an adorable butterfly stencil for under two dollars! So I picked up some burlap canvas and decided to spruce things up for spring.
It’s a new season, and what better way to change up my “mantle” than by switching out my DIY burlap wall art. The project is under five dollars to make and takes under five minutes to make.
All you need is:
- an 8×10 burlap canvas (I always get mine with a coupon.)
- stencil
- white craft paint
- painters tape
- spouncer type brush or stencil brush
This is such an easy project! I used red paint for the reindeer burlap wall art I gave as a Thanksgiving Hostess Gift to my aunt but I like the look of white acrylic paint on the burlap. It’s simple and stylish.
First I tape down my stencil with the painters tape. I also have stencil adhesive but the tape is a lot faster.
Then I dab the pouncer in white paint. I also dab it on a clean area of the foam plate that I always use as my paint palette to remove excess paint. (I’m pretty fancy.)
I start to lightly tap the brush over the stencil until I am done.
Acrylic craft paint dries quickly so in no time at all I have a finished piece of burlap canvas wall art.
In reality, you don’t need a stencil. If you find a simple image you like, you can print it out. Lie it over the burlap canvas and grab a super sharp pencil. Use the pencil to trace over the print out, making sure to pierce the paper so that you actually trace onto the burlap canvas. Then you just have to paint over it. If you look at my lucky four leaf clover burlap sign, you’ll see how it’s done!

This is so simple and I love it. I need to have to go shopping with me though… I walk through the clearance sections too and I see all these fun and fancy things – but then I have a creative FREEZE and I go BLANK for ideas of what to do with the things – so I walk away without anything… I need to be better abour recognizing creative wonders when I see them.
I love the burlap canvas too – I have a bunch of white ones at home… need to probably just paint them and then go to town!

If you ask my husband, I am sure he will tell you that I have a shopping problem when it comes to craft supplies. I have an even bigger problem when it comes to organizing my craft stuff lol. I go to the store with something in mind usually. I had been wanting to make a new canvas and originally planned to use my stencil cutter to make it. I’m lazy so spotting the stencil was a godsend 🙂 It cut so much time off the project. I don’t use the stencil cutter around my kids because my son sometimes has difficulty controlling his curiosity.
