I am not a fan of canned food. While there are some exceptions, in general, I literally cringe when my husband suggests that I grab some cans for our hurricane prep bin.
Usually I snag a few cans of soup then focus my attention on filling up our freezer and dried goods pantry. Why else would we have a deep freezer and generator?! After hurricane season is over, I have canned foods to contribute to the food bank.

Frozen foods to stockpile for hurricane season (if you have a generator)
With the uptick in tropical storms over the last decade or so, many Florida homeowners now have one. Ours is my most prized possession.
I had to work hard to get my hands on one. I called dozens of stores over the course of a week (because of course there was a storm heading our way). Finally, a Home Depot answered that they had a shipment come in and to hurry. But I couldn’t just rush in. The hubs was away on business and I had to get the kids to school. When I finally ran in, I took my place in a long line. I got the absolute last generator from that shipment. I felt like I won the Olympics. That baby has come in handy.
There are a few types of frozen items I like to stock up on for emergencies.
- Meat items that are easy to throw on the grill. After a hurricane, the sun and the heat come in full force. When the power is out, the house becomes oppressively hot and humid. Cooking outside is a must.
- Convenience foods. Microwaveable food or things that can be cooked in short order help conserve gasoline. The generator can’t power our entire home all day. Keeping our food cooled is the priority so we sacrifice elsewhere.
- Frozen soups or stews. I like to have nutritious and delicious food ready to thaw and reheat.
One of our favorite convenience foods.
You’ve probably noticed that we like fried rice. One of the first recipes I shared on the blog was a vegetable-laden fried rice recipe I used to sneak extra veggies in to feed my kids when they were picky eaters. (Update – Both of my kids eat a ton of vegetables now!) I still make it every now and then because we enjoy it but it was once one of the “hacks” I kept in my parenting toolkit. However, it doesn’t taste as good after being frozen. Besides, it’s one of the few things that I can make, stick in the fridge and know that it will be gone within 24 hours. My family loves leftover rice dishes!
This frozen fried rice from Ling Ling surprised me with how good it is!
This post was sponsored by Ling Ling, all opinions expressed in my post are my own.
Ling Ling Fried Rice makes it easier than ever throw together supper. Not only is it a convenient sports night supper, a fall back meal when being a mother is harder than usual, it makes an excellent side dish. We enjoyed it tonight with grilled chicken and veggie skewers. You can purchase it at your local Walmart or Winn-Dixie grocery stores.
Why I like to stock up on Ling Ling Fried Rice
This easy frozen meal is cooked with Ling Ling’s Infusion Cooking Method, which according to their website, means they infuse each grain of rice with their signature sauces and seasoning. (Ooooh fancy!)
When pitted against Chinese delivery or take out fried rice, it will win every time. The kids were evidently surprised when they tasted it. They did not expect it to taste like it was homemade and it did.
The Yakitori Chicken fried rice almost comes close to the deliciousness of my own. It’s definitely my favorite flavor.
If my family didn’t know that I would never put peas in a dish I made from scratch, I could add some eggs, a squirt of honey (shhhhh that’s my secret ingredient), and a dash of Badia complete seasoning (my other secret ingredient) and they’d never know.
This frozen meal is worth a spot in the deep freezer.
