For the moms signing their sons up for baseball for the first time, I have a few tips for you! This will be my oldest son’s fifth year playing, which is hard to believe. I know the thought of your son playing baseball (or soccer) can feel overwhelming at first, but I promise it’s going to be okay. These tips will help you feel a little more prepared for the season ahead.
1. Buy Secondhand Baseball Gear
If you’re a first-time baseball mom, you don’t need to spend a fortune buying brand-new equipment. You can easily find secondhand baseball gear that works just as well and saves you money.
Don’t be afraid to browse Facebook Marketplace or local garage sale groups for equipment your son needs. Baseball can get expensive, especially when you’re just getting started, so saving money wherever you can is always a good idea!
2. Find the Best Baseball Field You Can
Many baseball leagues assign players to teams based on where they live, which can be frustrating if your local field isn’t the best. Whenever possible, I try to find a league with good facilities because I want my kids to have the best experience possible.
While the condition of the field doesn’t tell you everything about a league, the overall upkeep of the facilities can give you an idea of how well things are managed. Do a little research, ask other baseball parents for recommendations, and find the best fit for your family.
3. Invest in a Good Lawn Chair
Trust me, you’re going to spend a LOT of time sitting at baseball games! My best advice is to invest in a comfortable lawn chair that you can bring to every game.
Many baseball fields have benches, but they can fill up quickly or leave you sitting somewhere uncomfortable for hours. Having your own chair makes a big difference, especially during those long game days. Your back will thank you!
4. Let Your Son Be a Kid
One of the most important things to remember about baseball is that it’s just a game. Your son is going to make mistakes, strike out, miss a catch, and have days when things don’t go his way. That’s part of learning!
Instead of getting upset when he makes a mistake, encourage him and remind him that it’s okay to try again. Your son needs you to be his biggest supporter, even when he’s having a rough game.
There will be plenty of opportunities for him to learn and improve. Let him enjoy the experience, learn from his mistakes, and remember that having fun is what matters most.
5. Enjoy Those Games
As a mom of three boys, I can tell you that baseball can be a lot of work! Between practices, games, equipment, and keeping everyone fed, the season can get busy quickly.
However, if your boys love baseball, do your best to enjoy the experience right alongside them. Try not to get caught up in the stress of it all. Soak in the little moments, cheer them on, and make memories together.
Time flies, and before you know it, your kids will be grown. One day, you may find yourself missing these busy baseball seasons, so enjoy them while you can!
6. Stock Up on Snacks and Drinks
As a veteran baseball mom, I can tell you that boys can eat and drink A LOT during baseball games! Between running around, practicing, and playing, they work up quite an appetite.
Make sure you pack plenty of water, snacks, and anything else your son might need throughout the day. You’ll also want to bring some cash for the concession stand because, let’s be honest, that’s an important part of the baseball experience!
Being prepared with snacks and drinks can save you from making unnecessary trips back to the car or spending more money than you planned.
