My son came home from school and reprimanded me about the snack I packed him! I put a Nature’s Valley protein granola bar in his backpack because I have been worried that he doesn’t eat enough meat or vegetables. It turns out that there is a girl in his class who has a peanut allergy.
I am ashamed to say that I sighed and was annoyed when he told me I can’t pack him snacks with nuts in them for his snack. He can have them for lunch because there is a special “nut table” for the kids whose parents packed them pb&J etc but no special table during snack time in the class. I should be ashamed for being annoyed. Because my daughter also has a severe peanut allergy, along with her dairy allergy.
However, I don’t run a peanut free household. (I know some won’t agree with this decision.) I have always been clear from the beginning to my daughter about what she is able to eat and not able to eat. She knows the consequences of eating peanuts. We’ve had peanut scares but I don’t believe in depriving everyone because of one’s restrictions. There are food items in the house that are “special” for my daughter, such as coconut milk ice cream.
I know what I have taught my daughter about her allergies but I know that at school, when confronted with peer pressure, she may be tempted to eat something she shouldn’t. I appreciate that the school has decided to ban peanut products in the classrooms.
I am still on the search for snacks that are healthy for my picky eater though.
Here are a few peanut free snacks that they both enjoy.
Dehydrated pineapples–this one was a surprise! Pineapples that are dehydrated with no preservatives ourselves are addictive. I have no idea why they taste so amazing…but they do.
Pepperoni and ritz–not so healthy but oh so tasty.
celery and soy nut butter
banana and soy butter or almond butter rolled up in a tortilla
I need more ideas though! What nut free healthier snacks do you kids enjoy?
