Recently a friend of mine posted on Facebook that she was shopping for a new washer and was looking for recommendations. Boy did that post get tons of interaction! Everybody loves to talk about laundry–love it or hate it!

The most common comment I saw was that she definitely needed to stay away from a front loading HE washer.

I couldn’t agree more.

How to soften and freshen the smelliest laundry.

I want a newer and more efficient washing machine. I would love a super capacity washer that can fit my comforter. But I am not willing to buy a washing machine that so many people say makes their clothes smell worse after washing than they did before.

YUCK!

Our clothes–especially my son’s undies and my workout clothes–get so STINKY! I can’t have them still smelling rank after being washed. That’s crazy to me.

I often share my DIY cleaning recipes and laundry tips on my blog. One of my friend’s told me that she loves the smell of Downy but wishes she could use the fabric softener dispenser for vinegar since I always sing its praises.

I told her, that “uh…that’s why you use the Downy ball.” As a matter of fact, I like to use vinegar and washing soda for my stinkiest clothes and Downy!

Say No to Stinky Clothes

It’s the best of both worlds.

I sprinkle a half cup of washing soda (or baking soda) in the washing machine with my favorite laundry detergent. I make my own or I use Tide.

Then I put 1/4 cup of distilled white vinegar in the fabric softener dispenser of my traditional top loading washing machine.

Downy Ball

I then pour Downy in my Downy ball to the fill line and toss it in with my laundry. Close the lid and turn it on.

How to keep your clothes from smelling

How easy is that?!

The Downy Ball can only be used in top loading non-HE machines. That’s enough reason not to buy an HE front loader!

Be proud of your non-HE washing machine! It has been with you for countless spills, stains and spin cycles. And it’s going to be with you for countless more. Buck the high-efficiency trend and be proud to be Non-HE!
With Downy Ball, your non-HE washing machine makes softness simple. All you have to do is fill the ball with fabric softener, seal it and drop it in at the start of the wash. Then let your non-HE washing machine automatically release the fabric softener during the rinse cycle.

  1. I’m going to have to start trying this. Hubby plays basketball frequently and his clothes are SMELLY! This would be a great way to prevent the double wash!

    1. Hi Gina! You can also try spritzing the laundry with a mixture of 3:1 vinegar and dawn before tossing it in the wash. 🙂 It works on my son’s smelly clothes.
