Simple Homemade Shower Soothers – Vicks Copycat

Ah, Fall. The kids are back in the school. The weather is turning cooler. And everyone is coughing, sniffling, and sneezing. I used to buy Vicks Shower Soothers but I believe they are discontinued. And unless you have no television, internet, or get the newspaper, you’ve no doubt heard how bad this flu season is. I love these budget friendly tips for avoiding the flu this season but if you catch it anyway, these shower soothers will come in handy. They come in handy for allergy season too!

My sinuses tend to get painfully tender. So for sinus support and relief, I have a stash of natural, simple to make, copycat homemade Vicks shower soothers on hand. This recipe is ridiculously easy and makes a bunch.

Years ago, when Porkchop and Pea were babies our pediatrician told us to hold them in a hot steamy bathroom with the shower running when they weren’t feeling well. This is especially helpful with toddler coughing and is one of our favorite cough remedies for kids.

The warm steam from the shower opens up sinuses and gives them some short-term respiratory relief. I remember buying Johnson’s Soothing Vapor bath. My son especially loved it. I wish I had known about essential oils back then.

For a while, I remember seeing Vicks shower tablets in stores. I went looking for them but couldn’t find any. (If I had known how easy it would be to make my own using only natural ingredients, I wouldn’t have wasted my time searching stores for them.)

To use the homemade soothing shower discs:

Drop one disc on the shower floor when you are showering. As the disc melts, it will release the oil into the steam of your shower for instant relief and sinus support. These simple, homemade soothing shower discs are a great way to relax and clear your head!

Why these oils?

Myrtle provides respiratory support and is soothing. I don’t see this oil in many recipes but it is handy!

Eucalyptus essential oil promotes health and well-being. It is also known for providing respiratory support and is found in many natural cough drops.

Peppermint has a calming and invigorating scent. It is also great for respiratory support along with many other uses!

    1. I have! But if your child is very young, I would let it melt first before putting him or her in. Note-when my kids were babies I used Johnson and Johnson’s soothing menthol bath wash instead.

  1. This is soooo awesome!! My husband has such a tough time with his sinuses, and I know these really would be incredibly soothing to him-especially when he’s in the midst of a sinus infection. I love that there is nothing harmful in these, and that they are so simple! Definitely going to be trying this out. Thanks for sharing <3
