DIY Home Decor Idea: Pumpkin Succulent Planter

I don’t know about you, but I don’t exactly have a green thumb. But succulents– succulents aren’t so bad. I love the ease of keeping these little plants alive. We’ve made Tin Can Succulent Planters, but this year I resolved to decorate for fall.

In the past, I’ve pretty much taken my cue from Florida’s weather and skipped over this season.

But I was excited to do a craft with the kiddos that helped them learn more about how plants live and look pretty too. I’m not going to lie, I also love the fall decor these pumpkins bring to the house. This is probably the easiest pumpkin craft you will ever do for as long as you live!

Create a cute and easy pumpkin succulent planter, perfect for adorning your holiday table or for gift giving.

Pumpkin Succulent Planter

Supplies needed:
Foam pumpkin, found at most craft stores or the Dollar Tree
Serrated knife for easy cutting
Small succulent cutting
Potting soil
Spray bottle
Water

Directions:
1. Begin by cutting out the stem of the pumpkin as well as ¼ of an inch around the stem. You want it to be like you are carving an actual pumpkin so you have an opening in the top. Remove the stem and set aside.

2. Take the knife and gently clean out as much of the inside of the pumpkin as you can. Succulents are quite hardy so you don’t need a ton of room, but at least an inch depth should be achieved.

3. Fill the space with some nutrient rich potting soil. Add the succulent cutting.
4. Replace the area around the cutting with more soil. Mist lightly with a spray bottle.

5. Keep the pumpkin succulent planter in a sunny space and mist lightly every few days to keep the soil moist.

Don’t have a green thumb? No worries! Your local craft store also sells fake succulents you could use for this project too. Just follow the above directions but omit using any soil as it is not necessary.
