Have your kids gone back to school yet? Are you excited about it or dreading it? I always feel a little bit of both. Back to school and fall sports is in full swing here in the Gym Craft Laundry household. Though we only participate in one sport, it seems we are always heading somewhere. Over the summer I complained about the kids eating everything. Now that our schedule is so busy, I worry about whether they are eating enough. And that would be the reason I focus so much on healthy snacks.
Do your kids descend on the fridge and pantry like locusts every day after school? Mine do. But since we have soccer practices, I regulate the snacking. My son will get sick if he eats within two hours of practice or a game. So timing is everything on soccer days.
We have late practices and early dinner days. So snacking after school has to be light, yet filling. I love making this snack mix for the kids because it is chock full of healthy fats and carbohydrates. Growing kids need to be refueled after a day in school. (And their mom needs so fuel for the intricate after school homework, dinner, soccer, showers, and bedtime hustle.)
After school snack mix
- Honey Roasted walnuts, pecans and almonds. (I roast these with a tablespoon of coconut oil and a drizzle of local honey.)
- Mini Pretzels
- raisins
- 3 oz. chopped dark chocolate
- clementine or other fresh whole fruit
- 20 oz DASANI® for all of us
- Gold Peak®
- If I’m having a particularly trying day I pack myself a mini can of Coca-Cola™
Mix all the ingredients in a bowl then separate into individual baggies.
I pack the mix in little snack bags and place them in a plastic air tight container which I then stash in the cooler I keep in my mom-mobile.
While the kids are in school, I work from home. My husband also works from home. However, I work for myself. My work day ends when I go to pick up the kids. His work day doesn’t end for several hours after mine.
Since our kitchen table sits outside of the office, the kids and I often have our after school snack at the park or library. Two little magpies sitting outside the office door while they snack distracts Daddy, especially when he’s video conferencing with clients.
I love this snack mix because we can eat them anywhere with minimal mess.
Another awesome thing about this snack mix is that it makes a great post game snack. I’m currently in love with full page clear packing labels.
I simply print whatever I want on them. For these snack bags, I put a few of things our team’s parents like to shout from the sidelines during soccer games. I trimmed them and stuck them on regular snack sized resealable bags.

Yes, we’re in full on back-to-school and sports mode ourselves! I always dread it, I miss my kiddos! But being able to work uninterrupted does have its perks! Love these–they’re such a great idea!

Love the labels! I’m going to check out the other snacks. I need to make something big and put it in an Oxo or something.
