Being a mother is rewarding, but it is also filled with many challenges. On my journey, I have discovered that being a good mom doesn’t mean you have to be perfect. In fact, trying to be perfect all the time makes you much closer to being imperfect. Here are a few things I have learned on this path to being a better mother:
4 Truths about Being a Good Mom
Your Laundry Doesn’t Have to Be Done
Of course, the kids need clean clothes to wear, but they could care less about the mounds of laundry you have piled up in the laundry room (unless folding it is their chore.) When you actually sit back and think about it, do you want your kids to remember you stressing about the laundry, or that you spent time with them? Being a better mother doesn’t mean the laundry always needs to be done. And now that my kids are responsible for folding their own laundry, they have a better understanding of how little always having neatly folded laundry has to do with being a “good mom.”
The House Can Wait
If you’re a mother, the fact that the house is always going to need to be cleaned rings true. My friends joke that when they text me, “What are you doing?” The answer is almost always, “cleaning.” In fact, the more you clean, the more your kids are probably going to destroy it. Instead of wasting time and energy cleaning every crevice in your home, take that time to spend with your kids.
Your Kids Don’t Care about Having Expensive Stuff
Okay, to a point they do, but only if that is what you show them is important. Your kids aren’t going to remember the cool iPhone you got them in 6th grade nor are they going to remember the expensive name brand shirt you bought. Your kids are going to remember how much time you spent with them. They are going to remember going to the park every Sunday afternoon, or how many times you came into their room to give them just one last hug goodnight. Kids remember experiences more than the things you can buy. In my journey to becoming a better mother, I have learned time is worth more than a thousand gifts.
You need to Take Time for Yourself
Yes, spending time with your kids is important, but so is taking care of yourself. The more you delve into doing everything for others and nothing for yourself, the more resentment builds. To rejuvenate myself and become a better mother, I enjoy a quiet moment in the evening with a glass of wine. If you are over 21 and enjoy a glass now and then, try Wente Vineyards. You can see where to purchase on the Wente Vineyards website.
This post is sponsored by Wente Vineyards but my love for wine is my own. Here is a why I like Wente Vineyards wine:
- It’s wine is a great way to relieve aches, pains, and give an overall relaxed feeling.

I’ve learned that kids respect you and give you the space and little bit of “me time” that is necessary to being a good mom, if you explain to them why it’s important and what might happen if you don’t get it. After having a pretty severe mental breakdown for about two years, a lot of convincing by doctors and psychologists, I’ve learned (and my kids finally approve), how to actually enjoy my precious alone time. It’s easy to squeeze that time in, but it’s completely useless if you spend that time full of anxiety and worry about what’s not getting done around the house. Or spend the time worrying that whoever is looking after your kids during that little gold nugget of time, is doing it all wrong! The most important thing I’ve learned is that the laundry and house cleaning can wait but that even my me time doesn’t have to be perfect or flawless and a little bit of worry is ok too. You can’t fail at me time!

That’s true! Me time is one thing I am naturally good at doing lol. I’m happy to hear that you are finally enjoying the “me time” you deserve. My next goal is to figure out how to work from home while my husband works from home.

Yes we all need time for ourselves, and wine of course!

I’m discovering (especially while it’s summer and all three kids are home) how important taking time for myself is. I’m not great at doing it, but I know I need it to be a better mom.
