Are you a new soccer mom? When my oldest first started soccer I had no idea what the soccer mom must haves were and couldn’t find anything online! I wasn’t alone.
With the start of the soccer season, more readers have been finding their way to my 5 things first time soccer moms should bring to field post. After reading it over, I realized that I forgot the most important thing–safety equipment. So I decided to update my list with the current things I schlep to the field three times a week.

Shin guards and cleats
My son is in U10 this season and has moved up a size in shin guards. When he was smaller, he preferred shin socks because they were less irritating to his skin but now we opt for more protection. Eight and nine year olds kick a lot harder than four, five, and six year olds did!
versus
*Side note for first timers* If you choose not to get shin guard socks and go with normal shin guards, don’t make the rookie mistake I made! I never played soccer myself and my soccer loving husband was out of the country when Pork Chop first started playing. This is how to put on soccer socks and shin guards. The soccer socks are long so that they can be pulled up high and then folded over the shin guard so it can’t be seen. I didn’t know that and after posting Pork Chop’s first game pictures, my family members laughed at me!
I was a little upset that the brand new cleats I got him at the start of last season are too small now. This is by far the most expensive soccer item I get. Often, Academy Sports or Dick’s Sporting Goods, have soccer sales at the start of the season. We have a hard time finding cleats that don’t squeeze his wide foot. This season while he was trying on every single pair in his size, we ran into an old friend of mine who has older soccer players. She recommended the Adidas Messi shoes and they are by far the most comfortable cleats he has owned!
The little umbrella attachment for the chair
I mentioned the must have folding chair in my last post soccer mom must haves post. They always go on sale at Academy or Dicks at the start of the season and can be purchased for $6. Some parents have the more expensive folding chairs. My son only plays soccer right now so we have longer off seasons. For the parents who have their kids in sport after sport year round, I would definitely suggest a more expensive folding chair with the shade attached. This season I decided to get the umbrella attachment for the rainy practices and the oppressive Florida sun. It may be “back to school for fall” or the “cooler spring” but it’s still 90 degrees or raining every day here. This will work much better than my holding our big umbrella up over our heads.
An extra soccer ball for siblings to play with
Younger siblings like to be in on the action too! If you don’t want your toddler running onto the field to snag a ball, bring one for him to play with on the sidelines.
A sports drink cooler thermos thingey
This is a new one for me. I used to bring “sports bottles” but thethermos is cheaper and holds more water. The bonus is that I don’t have to do my early season lecture about squirting water at his team mates because the cooler can’t be used as a water cannon. I fill it with ice and water. It is a lifesaver for the long practices that now include “conditioning.”
Our coach prefers one that can hang on the fence but I got one with a strap so that Pork Chop would actually remember to grab it.
Handy manual portable ball pump
This little hand pump fits perfectly in the sports sack! I don’t have to worry about checking the soccer balls before leaving the house. Quick and easy–which are two of my favorite words after “cheap.”
Sports Cinch bag
I keep cleats, shin guards, soccer socks, the ball, and the pump in a cinch sack so we can grab it and go.

Why are you dreading it? I mostly love it. It’s the hectic schedule that I hate!
