It is that time of year. Costumes, crafts and candy are what come to mind when October rolls around. The other thing I always think about during October is whether my children’s teeth will survive all the sweets they are ingesting! Dental health is a real concern for kids because it affects every aspect of their health!
Almost 300,000 children in Florida are living without health and dental coverage. Over half of them may qualify for free or low cost coverage through Florida KidCare. Florida KidCare offers both subsidized and full-pay coverage for Florida children. One small thing I can do as a parent is to limit the candy around our house. Another small thing I can do as a Florida resident is spread awareness about the health and dental benefits from Florida KidCare. Check out Florida KidCare and apply anytime during the year. With year-round open enrollment, the time to apply for Florida KidCare is always now. You can apply anytime online!
Here are 3 ways to get rid of extra Halloween candy so that my kids can keep their teeth healthy and strong.
3 Ways to Get Rid of Extra Halloween Candy
It is fun to do something that can bless other people while at the same time improving my family’s health. Getting rid of extra Halloween candy can actually make someone else’s day! It is a bonus!!
Send Extra Candy to Deployed Troops
Our deployed troops can always use a little extra encouragement. Receiving a box of Halloween candy will lift their spirits. This is also a way we can talk to our kids about giving to others and supporting the troops. When my husband was overseas, he told me how much the guys appreciated it when they got candy.
There are several organizations that organize Halloween collections for the troops. You can get more information on where to send your candy at Soldier’s Angels or Operation Gratitude.
Halloween Candy Buy Back
Another way to get rid of all that extra Halloween candy is to participate in a local Halloween Candy Buy Back program. These are usually done at a dental office.
You take your extra Halloween candy in and the business will typically give you cash or coupons of some kind for the candy. Sometimes the dentist will give out dental supplies for kids or coupons to local activities or businesses.
You can click HERE to find out if there will be a Halloween Candy Buy Back near you this year. Kids enjoy this because they get something tangible for their candy.
Make Gift Bags for Random Acts of Kindness
The third way we like to get rid of extra Halloween candy is to make little gift bags full of candy. I just buys some clear cellophane bags and use ribbon to tie the bags after I fill them with candy.
We keep these bags of candy to give out to our postal worker, librarian, teachers, etc. It is a fun way to even do random acts of kindness—for complete strangers!
