What?! No more pain from shots? Yeah!

It is difficult to tell from pictures but Princess Pea is small.  Not just preschooler small; she is  fell-off-the-growth-charts-and-was-tested-for -dwarfism-small (It turns out that she’s merely of Asian descent and small).  It’s okay though because her big personality more than makes up for her lack of size.

When Pea was an infant, it would take a nurse, doctor, and myself to hold her down while she got her vaccinations.  As a toddler, I started enlisting friends and family members to also help hold her down.  My helper always ended up leaving the room in sympathetic tears.  Pea didn’t just cry.

She kicked, screamed, punched, and yelled the baby version of obscenities.  This was actually okay for shots but was a problem for blood draws.  The fighting resulted in more sticks and failed draws.  The record was two sticks in each arm, each hand, a finger, an ankle and all to be told that the lab could not draw her blood and we would need to go to the hospital.  I am pretty pragmatic and knew that her dramatics were mostly fury at the indignity of it and not actually pain.  She would cry, hours after the stick, if she glanced at the band aid and was reminded of the stick.  If I removed the band aid she wouldn’t…hmmm.

She gets regular blood work done to make sure her organs are handling the NSAID medications she needs to keep her joints from swelling.  It has never gotten easier.  That is why I am excited about the Buzzy, which was introduced to me by Kim Miller of Living with Juvenile Arthritis.

The Buzzy is a safe, and sanitary device that overwhelms the body’s pain nerves with cold and vibration.   It takes away the pain of the stick!  This product can be used for adults too (you don’t have to get the cute bee).  I wish I had it during pregnancy.  I hated the finger sticks for my gestational diabetes.  It also helps alleviate minor pain from hives, bug bites, and splinters, insulin injections to name a few.    Buzzy® was a 2011 Medical Design Excellence Awards recipient and Top 10 Innovative Technology Company in 2012.    MMJ labs who make the Buzzy now has a home version available called the mini Buzzy for shots and they have kindly agreed to let us give one away to a lucky reader!

You can learn more about the Buzzy for Shots here.

Entry is easy, but limited to legal residents of the USA. (Sorry to our Canadian and international friends, we are working with restrictions from Health Canada.)  The winner will be notified by email within 48 hours of the giveaway’s conclusion, and the prize will be fulfilled directly by MMJ labs. The lucky reader will be able to choose between a Buzzy mini or a Buzzy Personal Tourniquet- ready model,  in striped or plain black.

    1. My daughter’s head fell off the growth chart before the rest of her! That had me worried until she hit the zero percentile for height and weight too a couple of months later. It’s weird. Her cousin calls her an evil genius so you would think her head would be bigger.
