The better the wood prep, the better the final result. Minwax Preparation products are the first step to ensure your wood surfaces show their most beautiful colors and smoothest finishes. Start with Minwax Pre-Stain to prevent streaks and blotches by penetrating the wood to promote uniform acceptance of water-based stains and helps control the effects of grain raise. |
If desired, apply stain such as Minwax Wood Finish Oil-Based Penetrating Stain or Water- Based Color Stains to bare wood surfaces following label directions. Surface must be dry and free of wax, grease, polish, any foreign matter, or old finishes in poor condition. Sand to a smooth, uniform surface and remove dust. Let dry completely. |
Wait at least 24 hours before applying Polycrylic Finish over wood stain. Stir well before and regularly during use. Do not shake. Apply a thin coat of Polycrylic Finish with a high-quality synthetic bristle brush. Apply in one direction with the grain. Do not over brush. Let dry at least 2 hours then sand with very fine sandpaper (220 grit) to ensure an even finish and proper adhesion of additional coats. Remove all dust. |
This long-lasting Protective Finish allows for easy soap and water clean-up, so you don’t have to stress about messes. Polycrylic is nonyellowing and low odor to provide lasting protection to your wood project and is a fast-drying clear coat that lets you get projects done faster. After final coat, allow 3 hours before light handling and 24 hours before normal use. |

Reviewed in the United States on February 21, 2024
Finishing was a long tedious process: lightly sanding, scrupulously cleaning all traces of debris with tack cloths and rags and carefully applying the poly with a lambswool applicator.
Today I have mostly laminate floors that are a dull satin finish. The previous owners were not fastidious people, so there were a few areas where there was evidence of delamination.
In order to prevent the problem from getting worse, I decided to coat the floors with Minwax water based poly. I used the matte finish. I coat 3X, and leave 24 hours between each coat to dry. In this particular application, the matte finish looks best since it blends beautifully with the existing finish.
I would caution anyone who uses this on their floors: place felt pads on your chairs and no spiked heels. If there is any damage, touch-up is a breeze.
I got the clear gloss finish. One coat seems to result in a variety of sheens across the surface. Some areas were matte and others were glossy. A little light sanding between coats and you can build up a fully shiny surface. I like the feel of the polycrylic.
I did notice a difference between how I prepared the wood. The wood that was treated with Minwax high performance word hardener looked like the unfinished wood except the golden tones were more radiant. The wood that was treated with Minwax water-based Pre-stain wood conditioner darkened the natural color of the wood. A similar enhancement to the richness in color was observed with the Minwax water-based solid-color stain wood finish.
The product is easy to apply, easy to clean great for the DIY’er or the tradesperson.
